Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
Given I work in IT, it frustrating me greatly to discover I have a complete inability to re-size my images in PS for web posting etc.

Any quick tips on this - I'm shooting a D7000...

My PS skills are not great anyway so a quick overview of link to something simple would be appreciated...

Damn, I hate I've had to ask this question :meh:

From the main tool bar: Image -> Image Size.

I use Lightroom for the majority of my processing, and hit PS when I need layers or something unusual. There are a number of on-line tutorials for PS.

If I understand the question, you want to resize a high res photo to a smaller size AND reduce the file size so that it is suitable for web posting.
If so, then your camera is irrelevant - shoot high res and make a low res version for the web.

So once you have done all your processing:
STEP 1
"Image" (Photoshop Menu) > "Image size" then change say the long side of your image to 1024 pixels (or whatever size you want. Many people resize to 800 pixels on long side) ... don't worry about the ppi number. It isn't relevant.)

STEP 2 - Now to reduce file size:
"File" (Photoshop Menu) > "Save for Web and devices"
Go to the top right and either use the presets or drag the quality slider ... try 40%. Look just below the photo in the preview window (on the left) and you will see an estimate of the file size. Adjust the quality to get something you are happy with.
Then click "Save" ... choose the location (I also add an "rs" suffix to let myself know that this file is small) > Save

Now the IMPORTANT bit ... you will be returned to the Photoshop window. When you close the file you will be asked if you want to save the changes .... NO - NO - NO.
If you save the changes you are saving the file that has been resized down to the 1024 pixels you changed in Image > Image size

Hope I have interpreted your question correctly.

Thanks! Yeah understood about the camera being irrelevant just thought it may help with respect standard file sizes I am working with..

I've done a couple of re-sizes (Therefore meaning my "Complete inability" is not "complete") - (Always using different save names!!) I just wasn't sure how they'd worked out as of course in PS they look insanely small in comparison to the image before hand, of course, math tells me I'm shrinking it to a 1/4 of the size roughly so i guess that's the reason..

It would appear I've been doing it right, but, I just thought there may be a standard, I rarely crop images and usually try to get the framing I want in camera to be honest, so, thanks for the responses and you've answered my questions, There's no real standard but to shrink generally to a more web presentable size... and try and maintain the ratio...

Cheers all, It would appear I was on the right lines but always good to have it reconfirmed..

Have a good day!

Workflow:

1. Crop tool : crop to your specs (1024x768 or whatever). There are some predefined specs there or you can custom.

2. Re-compose your cropped image

3. Resize : keep constrain active In this way your image won't be skewed or distorted as compared to when you resize directly.

You should be selecting "best for reductions" as the method in the Image Size screen. This keeps the image looking sharp; the enlargement method makes resizes soft.
