I thought that some people doing landscapes and other such things besides portraits might find this useful for photos that need cropping to meet this rule.

I always keep the grid display on with the cropping tool. Especially with portraiture, the grid helps you keep the eyes even with or more above in the top third of the frame. If the subject is offset, the grid will let you hit the intersect points easily for subject head/eye placement in the frame. Very useful.

Very interesting! I did not realize that the rule of thirds fit into portraiture, but now that I look at some of my photos I'm very close. Now that I know how the grid works I will use it all the time.

Which software do you use to have the Rule of Thirds grid appear in the cropping tool? I use Photoshop CS5 at work and you can choose to have it appear in the cropping box from the options at the top, but at home I have CS4 and no such options.

CS5. The grid does display in LR3, maybe ACR also, but cropping is one of the edits I do on the back end, so it's CS5 for me. I tend to adjust tilt (fixin' the horizon) in ACR.

I had a feeling it wasn't in CS4. Oh well.
