Scanned photo prints. How to store a caption within them?

I've read about IPTC metadata thing but what if I want to actually scan the original hand-written caption and link that image to original photograph?
1)Two-layered image file
2)Linking them together by the link that only exists within some "Photo manager" software. Bad idea. Once you don't have that software the link is missing.
3)Putting two images in one folder
4)Joining the images together
All of these ways have lots of downsides. Better idea anyone?

I've scanned a gazillion old family photos.

My solution was Photo Caption Creator. I then transcribed what was on the back to the caption.

Another option is to use an EXIF editor and embed the information as EXIF. However, you run the risk of having the information stripped if you email or upload it.

I would import that image to Lightroom and then add all the information of the image such as the IPTC, keywords, ..........
