I ran into this little beastie while doing a photowalk in Sussex, England.

About 5cm / 2 Inches long:

Lots of work to de-noise.

I live in Sussex and I have seen a grand total of 2 of them. Imagine a wasp that is bigger than a credit card and bright orange that emits a very distinctive low humming sound when flying.

Trust your instinct to run away from these creatures. My desire to get a good picture of a European Hornet will be tempered with a survival instinct.
