Seed and Ice

Hello all,

My first post to the forum and also my first macro shot.

I wish to improve my photography and would therefore welcome any advice or critique.

This photograph is of a solitary seed from a pine cone which I spotted lying on the snow whilst taking a walk this afternoon. I have sharpened a little and cropped, but that's about all the post processing and it was taken with a Nikon 90 and a 40mm macro lens.

Actually I think that's a maple seed. They look similar, though usually larger than pine seeds. The pericarp (the "wing" or "sail" section) on a maple seed tends to have the veining which is very dominant at the leading edge and then curving backward toward the leech.

The shot could use some highlight and shadows adjustment. The camera likely tried to reduce the exposure owing to the bright snow/ice background but this causes the seed to appear quite a bit darker.

Thanks, Tim. I found the seed near some pine trees so assumed that's what it was, but I think you're right and it's actually a sycamore seed (I think the sycamore is a type of maple). I'm not sure why, but the image looks brighter on my computer than it does posted.
