Below is my first attempts at self portrait. Vivitar 285HV flash in hand. Probably not the most creative shots, but it was more an exercise in the portrait and the flash. Not sure about the crop on the second shot.

Thoughts?

I think it depends on how you want to portray yourself. You look rather boyish in the first shot while in the second you look almost sinister. I think you shoul try to pick out a theme and shoot for that so that you will have much more interesting and creative photos.

Thanks Snake. I am fresh on the off camera flash and need to get more practice with it.

I don't really know what a 'self-portrait' is suppose to say, but looking at the photos, I like 2.

Could be my weak eyes, but looks like the wall is in focus, but the eyes aren't. The sharpness of the white wall takes away from the subject I think.

So you're saying that's not YOU in your sig pic!?

I am a newb, so take what i say with a grain of salt.

I would retry the shoot. Put the flash at 45 degrees and have it atleast 5 feet away from you. tape a single piece of one ply TP to the flash to offer *some* diffusion, and like a roller coaster, keep all arms in the ride.

Not bad photos. Try a stand for the flash, and a beauty dish, great for focusing light on a subject evenly. Itll help with the washout you had on the camera-left side of your face Also as mentioned no holding the flash and have it a little above you shooting on an angle down onto the subject.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I had the camera on the tripod firing on a timer and was interested to see what effect a straight handheld flash would give. after a few shots i placed an object in place and set the focus to it, so I probably wasn't in the exact focus point. After a few shots I did attempt a paper towel as a diffuser.

I will definitely be attempting again soon.
