Shutter speed on Nikon D300

Shoot well, Joe

But a general rule of thumb is to not use a shutter speed faster than the focal length of the lens you have on the camera. So if you have a 50mm on the camera try to not use anything over 1/60th shutter speed, 100mm 1/100th or 1/125 close enough etc. every person is different as to what they can handhold without camera shake. Read up on how your ISO or Aperature will affect the shutter speed as well.

You have that rule of thumb backwards

Yep. Don't use a shutter speed slower than 1/the focal length of the lens as a rule of thumb to control camera shake. However, that assumes you're using good camera holding technique. If your holding technique sucks, you'll need to use a faster shutter speed.

If you want to shoot something that moves without any blur, the faster it moves the faster the shutter speed you need to stop the motion.

Shutter speed also determines how long the image sensor gets to 'see' the light from the lens.
