slow autofocus speed on new 35mm nikon lens compared to my 18-55mm kit lens

This could be 100 percent operator error but it seems like my 35mm lens takes longer to autofocus or will not want to focus on the face compared to the kit lens. If I select a single point AF it will focus lightening quick. This is all on a Nikon D3100 under the same lighting conditions.
