Yet another from the past.
I am always culling pictures and came across this one.
Perhaps it is the laterite dust that coats everything and the oxidized paint from the constant heat and humidity that provides the rich colors of South East Asia.

These pictures really set off a stream of memories of these trips, some of the best times of my life.
Cambodia is not my favorite country; except for the temples at Angkor and the capital, it doesn't have a great
deal of attraction for me and, since I enjoy walking around by myself, the signs warning of unexploded mines really spoil an afternoon.

This was taken with the D70 and the classic 18-70 lens one of those odd Nikon lenses that were cheap in price but marvelously good in color and detail.

Ya, agree with your sentiments. Strange and somewhat unnerving country. Beautiful and scary.

If you have the opportunity, see the movie 'City of Ghosts' with Matt Dillon, James Caan etc. It's not a great movie but the atmosphere of uglier sections of Phnom Pen and rural Cambodia and the sound track of Khmer music are just perfect.
I just never was able to get comfortable there.
So I stuck to visiting the temples and stayed out of the fields that said Achtung Minen.

We went to one of the temples that had been in the Angela Jolie movie

and when we came out we were swarmed by kids selling stuff from cold soda to woven wall hangings.
Our trailer had a flat, so the driver dropped the trailer, left us there and went off to get a new tire. (doesn't look flat but with two of us, it was on the ground)

So we just wandered around.
When the vendors realized we were stranded, they treated us like guests.
Put chairs in the shade, brought us cold water and were, all in all, great hosts.

The children acted like they had never seen themselves on the back of a digital camera and were both shy and overwhelmed.

And, of course, the temples were stupendous.

My guess 3 weeks in SEAsia including airfare, visa, etc is less than $3k
