Soccer shoots - first time

Hi,

Being my first shots with Canon EOS 550d and generaly in sports I'm looking for your oppinions regarding the below photos .
It was damn hard to catch the right moment as I expected to be more easy but I guess that I will need more practice for that - to find the right position in the field.

The photos really aren't very good, but then as you said, it was your first time shooting this, and a tough sport to shoot at the best of times with all the right gear. I'm guessing that if the lens matched the body then it wasn't long glass, well at any rate anything longer than a 200? Soccer is a sport that really needs to be shot with a 300+ lens, 500mm is better, shoot it from the end of the field and not the side., you get better seperation when shooting down the field, usually around 5.6-6.3 and a shutter speed of 500sec or higher, depending on the light. Shooting sports well is one of the toughest things to do.

Currently I'm using Canon EOS 550d with Canon EF-s 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. In the Saturday game I've been using constantly the shutter speed at 1/1000 value.

Regarding the position in the field, the funny thing is that, at least in our country, the referees allows you to stay only in the end of the field. But being the first time - it was a little hard to find the right position.
