Some snow photos

Hiya,

These are some photos I took in Japan, some I'm very happy with others are sort of ok. This was my first season with an SLR so go easy

#'s 1,2,3 are my favourites.

#4 the skier could have been bigger in the frame, but it would have meant cropping out the landing and then you have no idea how big the drop is.... if I was to do it again I would go further back and zoom in more...

#5 I'm aware the sky and snow blend into each other, but anyone who's spent a season in Japan will know that's how the place looks for 5 months of the year....

#6 Will's double tail grab, if only that #@$%ing tree wasn't behind him

What camera and lens did you use, like you the first three are my favorites. The last one of those three is my top favorite. I like how you captured the action.

#2 has good color, but I find it too "busy". It took me a few minutes to figure out which way the skier was moving, And the bench? he's jumping on (and the tram? behind him) make it too confusing to tell what's him and what isn't.

#4 I think you nailed as good as you're going to get. The blue jacket in the field of grey-and-white brings your eye to the skier (who is the subject of this picture), but you still get a sense of the scale he's dealing with.

#5 I would have either zoomed in more to show the skier "bursting out of the snow", or waited until he was clearer. Also, I would move him off-center somehow to increase the picture's effectiveness.

Patriot: All these photos are shot with a Canon 550D and the kit 18-55mm lens. Thanks for that, #3 is definitely one of my favourite shots from the season. I really like #2 as well, #1 is ok...

rlemert: thanks for the input... re #2 this is a shot that would be aimed at the ski/snowboard crowd.... to me it's obvious what's going on but I snowboard 250 days a year so I'm pretty familiar with the landscape..... also to me his direction of movement is shown by his goggles and left arm, it's actually one of the reasons I like this photo so much.... he is sliding the box almost switch (backwards) but looking and pointing towards where he's going... also I cut the ramp (should be on the left) and left the exit end of the box to try and imply the direction.... but now you mention it, I can definitely see how the photo could be confusing to others... bummer, I was really stoked with that shot

The pre-crop version still has the in-ramp so I might tweak it a bit and see what I get.

re #4 thanks, I only had about 2 minutes to set up for this one so ultimately I was pretty happy with it, I would've liked it a bit better but hindsight is a wonderful thing...

#5 is part of a sequence, I have a shot slightly earlier and slightly later but this is definitely the best shot of the group. Maybe a split second later would have been nice... You might be right when you say move him off centre, I'll have another crack at the crop and see what happens..

So I learnt something tonight.... I wasn't happy with the last post of this crop, it looked dark and crap to me here but looked fine in LightRoom. Here is the same image exported in the Adobe RGB (1998) colour space instead of sRGB like I was doing.... I didn't realise there was a difference.

For comparison here is the image in sRGB (the crop is slightly different)... first one is heaps better!

And here's another one from the depths of J-pow... it's not sharp and I don't think it's a great photo by any means but it does give an idea of just how deep the snow is!
