Split Rail

These rails aren't split so technically it's not a split rail fence. This would be a post and rail. Just busting your chops...

Sorry, but to be honest, it really doesn't do much for me. It's a photo of a, not very sharp, fence along a path with no particular subject. I see the angle thing you got going on there but it doesn't go anywhere. Sort'a like a book missing the last page.
Maybe someone else will see more then I.

I have to agree with Rick. This picture lacks any dynamics. However there is done a very positive compositional work. All elements comes together; diagonal line coming from the corner and nicely dividing the picture into two totally different zones etc. The only thing missing is a strong subject. You have to look for it somewhere else.

I can see the leading line idea, and the half-toppled post is somewhat interesting, but it needs a bit more in the way of a subject.

I believe this is considered split rail, btw:

I thought I had more of these from my trip to Gettysburg a couple years ago, but not too many show the fences themselves.

I can't argue with the consensus, decent composition, no real (interesting) subject, fair enough. It really irks me that I misidentified the fence

Well I have seen worse and taken much worse. And I don't know much about fences either so nothing to lose sleep over. All said and done I like more about it than I dislike.

Maybe changing the vantage point, less foreground? less background? vertical w/less fence and more height to the trees? standing closer looking down along the fence and see if there's some pattern to the fence posts - see next time (if you go there again) what else you can do with it. The shadows could be interesting, maybe a different time of day or showing more of the shadows in the frame - lots of potential with this. If I'm not seeing what I want in my viewfinder I walk around til I see what looks better.

As it is, did you make copies and try any different crops? I'd think about cropping each side, maybe lose the post to the left (crop a little to the left of the tallest tree trunk?) then go about 5 posts to the right (an odd number can often balance better than even - learned that in art classes somewhere sometime), and crop the bottom and/or maybe top a little to balance what was lopped off. You could almost have two pictures here, one showing more of the foreground, another showing more of the background.

You saw an interesting subject that could make for a good photo, I think it's a matter of what's interesting about it or what caught your eye. What do you want viewers to see?

I like it. I like the fact the fence is out of line. I like the detail, composition. I like the trees. I like the shadows. I think it is a good picture that could be a really good picture. Probably wouldn't be A GREAT one because it isn't interesting enough, but good enough to put on a wall. Maybe the answer is in the time of day and those shadows. The lighting. I like the path too.
Far as the subject????????????????????? The fence and path are the subject. shadows are the subject.
you should see the photo at my dentists office. Makes this one stellar

I think bribrius's cc says it well. The subject is the fence, I liked the line and the crop with the leaning post on the 3rd. I agree that a more interesting subject could have turned an ok picture of a fence into a really good photo.

As to whether I have another copy, I do but it is just more fence. :)

Appreciate the comments....
