Sunpak DS-20 flash problems - any ideas?

I have an older Sony DSC-D770 digital camera and I have a Sunpak DS-20 flash attached to the hotshoe.

I have the external flash selected on the camera menu and the flash will fire for three-four shots (doesn't matter if the flash is set to AUTO or MANUAL), but once its 'ready' light illuminates, the flash will refuse to fire until I press the 'ready' light on the flash, which will consequently fire a test flash, forcing me to wait for the flash to recycle.

this obviously gets very annoying since I end up missing several shots due to the flash not firing as expected.

does anybody have any insight/advice on this issue?

i have one of those sunpacks ... to sum it up in a word "its garbage" .. get a dedicated flash for your cam
