Thanks, all. I don't know much about this type except when they are around. I don't see them often and they seem to just show up. This one actually flew directly over my house until smaller birds started harassing it. I didn't have my camera in hand at the point or could have had head-on shots of it.

In the UK we have black headed gulls and during the breeding plumage they are a horrible mix to get right - very black heads and white bodies - although if you find a good spot you have many chances to get it right.
