From Google: "John Deere (1804–1886) was an American blacksmith who invented the first commercially successful self-scouring steel plow in 1837. Designed in Grand Detour, Illinois, to solve the problem of sticky prairie soil clinging to cast-iron plows, Deere’s plow used polished steel from a broken sawmill blade to cleanly turn heavy soil."

It also signaled the end of the great midwestern prairie.
