They are Mallard Ducks, probably the most common type of duck here in the UK.
As you clearly guessed the flamboyant plumage denotes a male, while the drabber coloured one is female, so probably mated (but I've often seen mixed groups, so perhaps he's just hopeful).
Nice shots BTW.

thank you.. i will not forget them now that i saw them close up
Canada geese have nearly finished raising their broods--thankfully. Big birds that blithely nest wherever they like and saunter across streets and roads with their goslings whenever they chose. Rarely hit, they're seasonal amusement.

I love Canada geese! They're the most arrogant little critters. Everything you say here is true. I think they're great. :586:

Those Mallard ducks are beautiful, Photo Lady! You got terrific shots of them.

We have them in NM all over the place and have a persona like a duck version of cats.

opportunists and they love the freebees.

This is about the most common duck species in Europe, we call them 'wilde eenden' (wild ducks) in Dutch, they are mainly found in cities and villages where food is easy to find and otherwise people will feed them. Although we normally just refer to them as 'eenden', in Dutch the name for the male is 'woerd' (yes, try pronouncing that!) and for the female simply 'eend' - we call a young duck, although depending on where you live in the Netherlands, mostly a 'pulletje'. Nice shots.
