Tokina 80-400mm lens?

I'm considering purchasing a Tokina 80-400mm AT-X lens. I understand that there are several versions of this lens. I can purchase the current version new for $650 (optimized for digital with faster focus) or pick up the previous model used for around $400. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these lenses and their suggestions regarding the additional $250 for the newer lens.

I would go to www.fredmiranda.com and www.photozone.de and try and find that lens.

I had the Tokina 12-24 F4 and it served me well. The build quality is very, very good and optical quality was decent, but not perfect. I'd recommend their lenses, but only after reading a few reviews.
