Hopefully these types of threads are allowed. I'm new to the forum and photography for that matter. I am creating this thread for a couple reasons. First of all would be so that I can get critique on my pictures all in one place, secondly so that I can keep myself on track for regular (weekly at the minimum) updates and also that I can show myself how I am (hopefully) improving as time goes by. I am hoping that this thread will encourage me to go out and take more pictures, try new techniques and up my skills.
I just started this summer and until recently haven't played around with the camera too much. At the moment I am using a Nikon D3000 w/ Nikon 18-55 f/ 1:3.5-5.8 lens that my Mom handed down to me as she upgraded bodies. I am looking to upgrade soon, but I'll do some research before that happens.
Nothing has any editing done to them.
These few pictures are from my very first time ever using this camera. It was at a local photography club's event night called "Photography in a Box". Basically at each table there was a box with various items, fabric and a light source. You could configure each table how ever you would like and had about 10 minutes at each table before rotating. I knew literally nothing about how the settings worked other than shutter speed, so I kind of just pressed buttons. I'm not a whole lot better now, but I'm learning slowly.

I like this shot, but one thing I noticed quite a bit later was the speck of gold glitter on the left, and the stray fabric strands off the ornament are pretty distracting.
