Tried something different

View tower at Arlington park race track. Accidentally quatered the photo and hit BW and wallah! The background is the actual sky. Feedback: good deal or a waste?

I find myself turning my iPad to look at it... I guess if your goal was to get people to do that or to turn their head to look at the photo then you were, at least for me, successful in that goal.
My personal opinion is that I would like it, processing and all, if it were standing straight up. It looks like you took a quick photo of it as it was falling over. Keep in mind I am not the artsy fartsy type so I'm stuck appreciating things that follow the "rules of photography".

Anyway, just my 2¢

Oh I definitely read that, but it does NOT not really answer my question. Are you trying to inflict a certain emotion by having it crooked? If so what emotion?

Simply trying something different is fine but unless you understand how that might effect the viewer you gain little.

For example your image because of how crooked it is portrays a feeling of unbalance and uneasiness to the viewer?

If that's the emotion you originally wanted to portray then sure it works. But I get the feeling that you were not thinking that much about what emotional reaction your image gives.

Photography is ALL about emotion. What emotion did you want to portray and does your image successfully do that.

Based on your response I don't think you thought beforehand what emotion you wanted your photo to give others.

You need to have a reason to tilt the frame. Just because it looks different or cool is not a reason. I like the movement in the sky but the tilt ruins it for me. However cudos for trying something different

thanks for the cudos but i don't have a reason thats why its cool! LOL

i like that it is falling down appearing. More important is i like how it is positioned in the frame. I looked at it a minute at the spaces around it toward the edges and where the base starts (about the third line) center of the tower top (about half frame or just over) and really looking at it from the distance to the sides of the frame i am not sure there is a better place for it to be, i dont see one. Like the vignette drawing your eye to the tower too. Really not so worried about it falling down appearing, but like how it positioned in the frame with your crop.

Rules, we don't need no stinking rules...but, it is not the lean I find particularly bothersome, it is more that the "box" of the tower is nearly dead square in the frame, thus drawing the eye to one spot and really not allowing a freer movement of exploration. In this crude edit, I've placed the center of interest more to the right using the left side of the frame as a place for the tower to "fall."

Measure from the base to the top and lay that measurement down the baseline..just the right amount of space with a nudge leftover for the dust to fly... Fun thing about aesthetics is it's like herding cats...douubtful it will ever happen or that everyone will agree on an edit.

I like how the contrast of the roof, box and supporting structure to the all gray and consistent sky leaves the eyes to look at the tower box.
