Great series! Hope to do more traveling while I'm over here in the pacific! Thanks for sharing Lew!

If you can get a hop to Kyoto, then it's about 6 hour flight to Bangkok and even shorter to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.
If you haven't traveled on your own in SEAsia, then Thailand is the easiest to get acclimated.
It has great tourist infrastructure and great transportation.
The further you are from the beaches, the nicer the fellow tourists are.
