Upgrade opinions - From a D40 to ??

I'm surprised no one is stressing the fact that you should really just keep your camera, save your money, and learn how to use it. The D40 isn't limiting anything, it's your lack of knowledge that is. You said you don't understand exposure, then you don't understand how to use a camera. Learn how to adjust exposure, and then let the camera be the bottleneck. Otherwise, you will be in the same place you are now, with a more expensive camera.

Use your resources. Youtube has a video for everything. search for videos about exposure and metering and start there.

Maybe the OP really just wanted the extra buttons and menus of the D80. I personally like the additional external controls of the D80; i did prefer using the LCD on the D40 over the top screen on the D80 (i know this is addressed on the D90 etc). That said, for most things I ever shoot, the D40 is plenty good (I usually use a P&S though

). As for the OP's lenses, I don't understand why you're trying to get rid of the 35/1.8 which is said to be a very good lens, unless you just don't like that focal length.

Edit: In your situation, I'd sell the D40 and kit lens and shoot with the P&S til I saved up enough money to get a better camera like a D90 or D7000. I may end up doing that with both my D40 and D80 (hold onto the Tamron 17-50 if possible though) since the D80 stopped working right, or sell them to make some money and not buy something else for a while (I do have a lot of decent P&S cameras on hand; good luck with me not buying something else though :lol:
