i think its a bit out of focus, not just soft.

the neck is in focus but the face is out. afs 300 has a pretty thin plane of focus. it was about 50 yard shot and i only had 1 second before it bolted. i relied on autofocus and multipoint should have had it on single point focus i guess. what do you guys do to get these quick shots into better focus?

It's a cute deer, but you really need to shoot at a shutter speed faster than 1/200 when using your lens at 300mm. Movement is really exagerated shooting at longer focal lengths.
