Using Gimp for PP best way to make B&W

How is the best way to make a shot black and white using gimp? Is there a specific option or do you just go to the colors section and "desaturate" till it is B&W? Thank you for the help.

Desaturating always works, then increase brightness and contrast will probably be required.
Dump Gimp and pick up a cheap version of Photoshop Elements or Lightroom.

Wish it was that simple. I'm a firefighter and live on a tight budget, and any money I have for camera toys I want some glass and a new strobe. Thanks for the help on gimp.

Here ya go! And Good Luck. I use and learned on Gimp but use Photoshop alot as well. You can do alot if not ALMOST as much with GIMP but it may not be near as easy as it is with PS.
