Velella Velella.
These are small cnidarians, or jellyfish, that have no means of propulsion other than the stiff sails that send them following the wind. These little sailors usually live out their lives in open ocean, using their tentacles to to snag plankton. Occasionally, the winds shift and cause mass stranding as occurred in SoCal 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, I was on-call the weekend of the mass stranding, but I got to see a few of the stragglers on a beach next to the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse in San Simeon, California.
