Okay, in plain English...

Just coming back into SLR, and new to Digital. Still trying to figure out the lingo and what Nikon lenses fit on and work with what Nikon DSLR
bodies.

Won't the old 500mm 1.8 / 1.4 / 1.2 Nikon "normal" lenses fit and work on current Nikon DSLR camera bodies?

I know the autofocus won't work, but they didn't have it anyway, same with VR.

Okay so it acts like a 75mm, just move back a step...lol

What about working with the 40D and X series bodies?

If it DOES work, just seems to me like an affordable way to get a good quality fast lens, and there are plenty of them around.

You won't get light-metering on a Nikon DSLR unless it's a d200, D3, D300, or D700. All other nikon dslrs require a cpu in the lens to meter the light.

Other then that, yes, old manual focus lenses will work fine on any nikon dslr, you'll save some $$ but they aren't extremely cheap.
