I think the "teacher" is waiting with her little crowd in the backstage area for the right time of the music to come for them to go/run/dance out into the scene for their performance, therefore the curtain has a meaning, they are, at this point in time, not yet to be seen to anyone in front of the stage. There is no open space for them as yet, they still have to wait for that specific time in the music to go.
