Kirk the ones with black background are taken at night on a window. I try to make sure no indoor lighting is behind the scene and if there's dust on the window I clean it up in Photoshop.

I find an easy way to get that is using a flash and a shallow depth of field with my macro lenses and having empty space behind the subject. It's not a look I always like and I'll often try to get some foliage in the frame as a backdrop. That said, a blacked out bg can look dramatic and really set off the subject.

It is good - but a female the ovipositor gives it away.
