Neat colors and patterns, but the first three look a bit underexposed?

I like them. Taking the sky out of context (as in removing the earth from the picture) kind of distorts the perception of near and far.

I wanted to really darken them down a bit.

Perhaps try turning up the contrast instead of darkening them. It may give you more of the result you were looking for without depreciating the image quality.
