What is your camera of choice?

I've always loved photography even throughout my childhood and now that I've just graduated I wanted to take it more seriously and decided to focus on visual arts for college. My mom offered to buy me a digital camera to began with and to keep the budget at $1100. What would experienced buyers and photographers recommend?

Two things to consider:

1) Do you know what college you are going to - if so ask them what system they use as chances are they'll have some in=house gear from one of the main camera manufacturers and as such buying into the same system as them gives you a greater chance to use a borrow gear from the department.

2) What kind of photos and subjects to you want to create and work with?
