What type of lens for a Car Shoot

I'm planning my first shoot this weekend with my new camera (Canon 7D). I'm going to be shooting my friend's car. Since I am in the market for some lenses, I wanted to know what the recommendations would be for being able to capture the car as well as a wide background with high buildings in the background. I want to get as much of the building as possible.

My price max is approximately $600.

Wide angle lenses are the way to go for cars. Tokina 12-24mm is really nice, also the Sigma 10-20mm is good too.

I agree wide angle lenses...Tokina 12-24, Sigma and tamron 10-24, tokina 11-16 and the newer sigma 8-16 should all be in your price range if you find used.

I use the Canon EFS 10-22 around 20mm for cars and it seems to work really well. I especially like the colours it produces.

Thanks! I researched the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS, and that seems to be a widely popular lens and is even sold out in numerous online stores. There are also tons of Youtube videos that praise it as the best lens for the midrange cameras. I think I'll go with that one.

The wider you go the more distortion you'll start to see. I do all my car shoots with a 70-200mm. It all comes down to how far back you want to shoot from, and what you are looking for.

I'm with imagemaker, I have been using my 70-200mm on cars a lot lately. As said, it all depends on what type of look your going for. Sometimes you want the car isolated from the background, sometimes you want the full background in the shot. There isn't really one do it all lens. I use my 8mm Fisheye, my 18-55, my 70-200 and sometimes my 35mm prime.

Thats a damn good lens. IQ on that thing is almost unbeatable. Puts there 24-70 to shame.

Distortion is good with cars if you work it right.

I use a Sigma 10-20mm for most of my car photos. The photos look good at 10mm and aren't too distorted. It's especially convenient when you're limited on space.
