Hello

I just have a 50 mm fixed lens in my tool box, wanted to ask a silly question.

Will Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L at more sharp at 50 mm then 50mm fixed?

Can someone please answer this for me?

The nifty fifty is brill lens my understanding is that prime lens is always better than zoom

It really depends on the quality of the lens. Some of the newer glass on the zoom lenses is comparible or even better than some of the older primes out there.

Depends.

Application and intended use

It's very rare, if ever that a zoom of any quality is sharper etc. than a prime lens, no matter how good the zoom is.
This link takes you to The Digital Picture. Bryan is the best Canon tester in the business and his reviews and comparison tools are the best.
Here the highly rated Canon 24-70mm L mkll is compared to the std, non-L 50mm 1.4 and it's pretty clear that even here, without going to the 50 L's, the std. 50 is sharper than the L zoom at f8, a very used portrait aperture.
You can play with the comparisons yourself!
I own most of these lenses and that is my personal experience as well.

I’m not a CANON guy, but no .. a prime is almost always better than a zoom when using manufactures lenses.

The 50 will also be faster allowing a combo of higher shutter speeds available, shallower depth of field possible, a brighter viewfinder view, autofocus should be faster, and a lighter weight.

The only tangible advantage would be, IMHO, the ability to go to 24mm. Between 30 and 70 a 50 will do the same think with just a few steps forwards or backwards.

LWW, are you saying that when using a 3rd party zoom, in this case the 3rd party zooms are likely sharper/better than a Canon prime???
From what 3rd party manufacturer are you eluding to?
