Thanks! This is going to sound dumb but I found that my diopter wasn't dialed in as well as it should've been before I took these pics yesterday and what a difference it made in sharpness.

Absolutely not - dumb that is! I have to shoot with my right eye (my left is trash), which is my best but my camera's diopter is still not strong enough to compensate for my bad eyesight. You really must "see" true focus through the viewfinder. Glad you corrected that. It really made a difference. I even noticed the scales on the bird's legs were crisp and sharp.
