I love the second one. I seem to prefer verticals for some reason, but also I think the sun and sky in the first are distracting from the main subject.

The second one is stronger with more concentration on foreground texture and the long winter shadows. Great shot.

No the second one is a completely different shot it is not just a crop. Note the sun flare is not present in the original second shot.
