Working with a click and shoot camera

Any ideas for maximizing the cheaper point and click cameras? I have a canon SD1000 which I feel is decent considering how cheap it was.

What situations would warrant use of the 1600 iso setting? Is that for night photo's or ? Also, as a general rule I assume best to use the lowest iso setting, say 80 or 100.

In good lighting, would you only use a 400+ iso setting for moving objects?

Yes iso 1600 is for night time and other very low light situations. And the lowest iso you can get away with is generally best yes, unless your trying to get an old grainy look (which works for some photos). But just make sure your not Using too low of an iso so your shutter speed is too slow. And finally, in good light which iso to use really depends on just how much light you have, basically, shoot at an iso that allows you to shoot at a minimum shutter speed of 250th of a second, probably safer at 500th, but 250th should be fast enough to freeze motion.
