aleinbee syncing with hotshoe flash

I am pretty sure that I won't be able to have my hot-shoe Sony flash fire from my alienbee strobe firing but I can't seem to get the alienbee to fire when my on board flash fires first. I was looking at images where i just had my hotshoe flash firing and my on board compared to when the alienbee was supposed to be firing as well and there wasn't a difference. I see the alienbee fire but it seems like its a tad bit behind my hotshoe flash firing.

Can I get them to work together?

Check your settings, your camera is probably puting out a metering pre flash, that will trip the Alien Bees. Check your manual, there should be a way to turn it off.
