When you download do you save the RAW images before you convert them to TIFF? What are the real advantages using this format (RAW)? I'm assuming NEF is the same as RAW with my Nikon D70. Is there really that much of a loss with the JPG format? Just curious...

I shoot almost everything RAW (NEF) with my D70, use Nikon Capture to tweak and save in TIFF...or if I'm using an online printing service I just save in JPEG just to save upload time.

I also have a Fuji S5100 but use mostly Jpeg cause RAW is just a pain with it. No real editors to use only a silly little program that converts them to TIFF. Course that camera is just for snap shots anyway.

I save the RAW files directly from the card to a CD-R. Then I view/download them to the computer for manipulation/conversion.

The one real advantage of shooting RAW is the lattitude you get with white balance & exposure that you just don't have with jpeg.
