Can't really tell what I'm looking at. The subject appears to be out of focus.

It does not just appear to be out of focus it IS out of focus.

It could have been in focus, but with Vaseline on the front lens element.

OP, what made you choose a fishing boat? And what caused you to take the photo without it being in focus?

Man, a lot of complaining about what is obviously a deliberate choice. I think it works. We saw something like this yesterday, I think.. Ah yes, same artist. There's a theme going on, and it's pretty powerful.

I like this one, I think it's evocative and powerful, and an interesting addition to the portfolio. A little more Goya and a little less Caravggio this time around.

Man, a lot of complaining about something that ruins the image. I don't think it works. Art is subjective, is it not? I could make a bunch of deliberate choices in the construction of a photograph, doesn't mean that they're GOOD choices though. Just because there is intent doesn't make for a good photo or choice.

Also, you were in on that "feminine tilt" thread, that epitomized the "needless complaining about the most minute of details." Just sayin'.

I was! I was on the 'what the hell does it matter, anyways?' side, for the most part, with a side of 'ok, ok, there's an optical illusion in play' and a little unstated 'you guys are idiots and jerks'

Art's not entirely subjective. "intersubjective" is the keyword here, a word basically invented to describe what Art is.

My opinion is that this image would be worthless and uninteresting if were not murky and out of focus. Reveal the mystery, and all you have a picture of a thing. Horses for courses, though!

It's not a fishing boat.

I did take it in focus. It was never intended to be a portrait, at least not in the normal sense. This was two exposures. Because i wanted the face blurry, I had to use a slow shutter speed. I blended it with the second in focus layer. A little blur tool and some PP later.. I got this..... nothing is clear when your feeling helpless.

I think the huge amount of black on the right side really detracts from what might have been an interesting image. maybe its meant to be smoke? if so, I think it was way overdone. personally speaking of course, I would have found this image very appealing without the huge BLACK smear on the side and top pulling me away from the subject trying to figure out what was blocking the lens. i would like to see this picture with the entire background wispy/smoky like it is on the left side. I dont really have any complaints about the blur, i think it works well in this case.

Interesting image (although a bit twisted)! Very dark (and I am not talking exposure!) Those of you who say you can't see what it is... look at the "face" (a man screaming??)... then look at the rest of the photo....

The darkness on the side is fitting... as is the OOF, as it would be much too graphic to be interesting without the OOF.

I opened it up in PS to see what was going on ... very creepy...It needs to be dark and out of focus

We agree on that point! lol!

Neat! :raisedbrow:
