I think the saturation levels work to this shot's advantage.

I can see what you mean about the desaturation looking a bit depressing, though I felt without it the photo was a bit cluttered. Maybe I went a bit overboard?

I just love this one. Cup cake fifty cents. Expression on the little girls face - priceless. I rather like how the cupcake stands out so boldly and the little girl doesn't. I feel if she did it would ruin the whole shot.
