I am looking at different cameras, with the intent of future purchases and I have become wondering what the real advantages of different cameras are when talking about image quality alone.

Assuming you mount the same lens, a top quality one, and you shoot the same image, same light, same everything. Would you see a difference if you shot the image with different DSLRs? Let's say a Nikon D750 and a Nikon D7200. They both are roughly 24 Megapixels, and a 6000x4000 maximum resolution. The former is full frame and the latter is crop. When you print your photograph, would you see a difference? If not, what's the point of going with a top of the line camera? Let's say you choose a D810. It has better resolution, better ISO noise, and probably much more, but is there a difference on a "standard" photo, meaning something shot in normal light conditions?

Crop sensor to fullframe has a big difference

As for the pure image quality if you're shooting in ideal lighting and thus not challenging the camera in any way then chances are they'd give you very similar performance. The differences in things like dynamic range and low ISO noise are going to come out when things get more challenging. And in the real world ideal perfect light every single time does not exist unless you only shoot in a studio.
