    What exactly do they do?
I have used the handy dandy search button but I cant find a complete answer... I see people talk about the protection value ($100 filter vs $1000 lens etc) and It seems that you can tweak the image with them. But cant you do that in processing afterwards? Unless there is something im missing (more than likely).

If you go to the Cokin website, you can see shots taken with and without filter for all their filters.

Ah. I shoot out in the dirt and dust all the time, so its probably a good idea to pick up a UV/clear for protection at least.... For outdoors/sports what other filters would you reccomend?

Also they mention not to use cheap ones, which brands should I look at and which brands should I generally avoid?
