I can't decide whether I should buy the 50mm f1.8 lens or an sb600 flash! I will be using both of them mostly for portraits, and so I'm not real sure which one will help me more. I will eventually get both, but I'm in college so I'm broke ;)

Anyway though, so any opinions as to which would help the most in taking portraits?
And as of now I'm just shooting with the 18-55mm that came with my D40.

I would say flash. It is pretty critical to get away from the built in ASAP ;)

Although, the 50mm is quite a bit cheaper than the flash. In my case I bought the 50mm first, but only cause I couldn't afford the flash yet.

I would get which ever one costs more (flash, probably) out of the way first, or it might be a longer time than you thought before you get the other one.

Well it depends if you get the AF-S 50mm so it will focus on your D-40 it is the more expensive piece . But if you dont mind manual focusing get just the AF version and get both....
