Flash or new lens? Help!!

I can't decide whether I should buy the 50mm f1.8 lens or an sb600 flash! I will be using both of them mostly for portraits, and so I'm not real sure which one will help me more. I will eventually get both, but I'm in college so I'm broke

Anyway though, so any opinions as to which would help the most in taking portraits?
And as of now I'm just shooting with the 18-55mm that came with my D40.

I would say flash. It is pretty critical to get away from the built in ASAP

Although, the 50mm is quite a bit cheaper than the flash. In my case I bought the 50mm first, but only cause I couldn't afford the flash yet.

I would get which ever one costs more (flash, probably) out of the way first, or it might be a longer time than you thought before you get the other one.

Well it depends if you get the AF-S 50mm so it will focus on your D-40 it is the more expensive piece . But if you dont mind manual focusing get just the AF version and get both....
