Glasses play merry hell with the microprism focussing ring - I have always found that when the split image shows it all as being in focus, there are little diamonds on the microprism ring. So I always ignore the outer collar and use the split image bit, or use the depth of field guide on the lens itself.
I rarely use the widest aperture anyway, as most lenses are better stopped down a bit, so there is usually a little bit of DOF to play with.
And for statics shots, why not bracket the focussing, just as you sometimes do for the exposure?
