Also, if you are looking for a UWA, I ended up with the very light and compact Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D IF-ED, which wasn't the top lens in the DxO mark but pretty close, and cheap in the used market by comparison.

Also on the other focal length side I use a 80-200/2.8 AF-D dual ring lens. It's awesome for sports. I've heard the 80-200 AF-S one is even better but harder to find.
