This has become "usual" only on digital displays where proper typography isn't available. F/stops should NEVER be written without the slash (fraction notation) or a colon (ratio notation).

Also, the "f" should never be capitalized except when it occurs at the beginning of a full, properly formatted sentence. At all other times it should be lower case because the proper variable for focal length in optical mathmatical formulas is always a lower case "f". Those that mis-write the notation only confuse others trying to learn.
