I need a good professional powerful laptop

its quite amazing the answers you get in threads like this.. first off.. this is being talked about in 5000 other threads on this site.. do a search.. to the guy up there who makes it sound like he knows what he's talking about.. jakedoza.. you clearly dont know what your talking about when you talk about macs... you say they dont play well with others.. your wrong.. infact they play VERY WELL with others.. everyone in my office uses windows, I'm the only mac user, and we have no issues playing together.... you also say they are expensive.. no they arent.. if you want a good computer, your going to pay for it.. a good (and I use that word lightly) windows laptop costs you anywhere between 1000-2000 dollars.. Macs are the same...

Hm. Well, I actually expected to find these machines to be much more closely aligned, but it turns out I was wrong.

Cheapest Dell notebook you can buy is $499.
The MacBook starts at $1099.

Now would I buy a $499 Dell? (or a $499 Mac, for that matter?) No. However, it's interesting that it appears you can't even get a Mac for that price.

And no, please don't bother going off on side by side comparison tests... comparing Apples to Oran... er, Dells... is kinda stupid.

manaheim.. i know that when it coes to cheap ones.. however if you notice in my message I say "a GOOD pc laptop" is goin to be between 1000-2000 dollars.. not a crappy one.. heck i've found pc laptops for like 300 bucks.. that doesnt mean they are good or are going to last...

First.. I wasnt poking at you.. but since you insist and actually showed that you really dont know much Ill poke at you.

Any computer technician will tell you that you dont want to buy a bottom of the line laptop because they are crap, as well as you dont want to buy the top of the line laptop because, lets face it.. the price isnt worth it.. you want to stay in the middle of the road with laptops which is around 1200 or so before taxes.. then you ALWAYS want to get the premium warranty deal on a laptop... add more money.. it usually ends up being around 2 grand.. If he/she is looking at a MAC then they are going to spend quite a bit anyway..

whoever said that they have dropped their macbook and hasnt lost data is very lucky, and also needs to tke better care of thier equipment.. My computer is just as important to me as my camera, and I wouldnt think people drop their cameras that often expecting them to work afterwards. You also dont hear them say.. oh oh.. buy a nikon because ive dropped mine and it works still.. When it comes to laptop hardware weather it be a MAC or a PC the internals are all the same... You can install a MAC OS on a regular PC, I've done it.. I didnt tell him/her to go buy something expensive, nor did I tell them they had to buy a desktop I said IF you decide not to purchase a laptop... .. I told him/her to research it extensively and really think weather or not they really need a laptop. I honestly dont understand needing a laptop to take on photoshoots.. I mean, if you dont think you got the shot.. then shoot again.. and if you cant get the shot.. then maybe you shouldnt be taking photos.

now pull your panties out or your rear and take a chill pill.. :lmao:

Better play nice... /edit

I'm in the IT field. I'm thinking you're just a PC fanboy. Let the person choose whatever they want. I picked up a refurbed MBP for $1400. With three year apple care, it would have been less that $2000. I've never had an extended warranty on any of my laptops and never needed it. If you were really a PC tech, you'd know that most replacements are fairly easy anymore.

I use my MBP for PS and Logic. It also connects nicely to my Linux box. It took about five minutes for me to setup Samba and get things running this weekend after a legit copy of Windows Home Server ended up making two of my desktops blue screen whenever they were rebooted...kind worthless OS there.

But then again, I use other windows platforms and have no problems. I could care less what another person buys and if you're getting your panties in such a bunch over what other people recommend, then you should just quit now.

So how's that for a qualified opinion?

Yeah, I wasn't really making a judgement on them... in fact, if anything I said I wouldn't buy a $400 notebook myself, which is an implied judgement against them... however, it is interesting that the entry point on even a basic Macbook is a LOT higher.

That could well be a determining factor for some folks.

the reason the entry level mac is so much higher than an entry level PC, is because the entry level mac is a better more stable computer than the entry level PC

Oh, stop it, Chris. Seriously. That statement is so overbroad and subjective as to be essentially impossible to either agree or disagree with.

how is it subjective.. you can honestly say that the base model mac is not better than a base model PC?? if you can say that, then you know nothing about computers...its absolutely ludicrous to even think that a base model dell is equal to a macbook base model

Yes, that's clearly it. I must know nothing about computers.

It's subjective because what is better?

The point I was eluding to a ways back there, is if someone is trying to get a laptop and cannot afford more than $450, then in their case a PC is absolutely better... because 1 laptop would be better than 0 laptops.

If they happen to have $1099 to spend and the company that they work on is happy to support them and their personal Macintosh, but has no staff to support Dells, then a $1099 Macintosh is better... because 1 supported laptop is better than 1 unsupported laptop.

...and 87 million other scenarios where either a Dell or PC would be better, depending entirely upon needs and circumstances.

I cannot, nor have I ever, nor would I ever, make a blanket statement suggesting that a PC is better than a Mac... nor the other way around. That would be an inherrently flawed premise because it is a subjective one.

K? K.

Why does a base model Dell have to be compared to a base model macbook? What about Asus, Acer, HP, etc...?

And they can be extremely reliable with a few tweeks. Sure the Mac experience is there out of the box, but if an individual is smart enough to reinstall windows without all the crap that comes from the prebuilt manufactures then it starts off as a reliable pc. I know a ton of friends that have $600 notebooks that are crap. This is because they use KaZaa, Limeware, browse for porn, and do other stupid things. "Hey look! A pop up that says click for a free iPod!" That about describes the reason entry level pc's are considered crap. User error goes a long way. I mean, HP can't be blamed for a moron screwing up their own computer.

Sure, it takes a bit more smarts to properly use and protect a PC...which is backwards since half the retards that want a cheap computer know nothing besides how to browse the internet and download virii. If the entry level macbook had the specs from the first gen of Core Duo MB's and cost $700, then there would be a huge market for them. Apple doesn't want to do that though, so the Consumers end up buying what they can afford.

Not bashing any company here, just mainly the users...

And Apple has had their share of problems and defects. Look at when Leopard came out. It took 6 months for M Audio to get their interfaces working with it. Sure it wasn't as publicized as Nvidia not having their drivers out for Vista in the first week, but the door always swings both ways here...

thank you for this reply.. its the first intellectual reply about laptops I've seen.. i 100% agree that most of PC error is in the user.. i fix computers all the time, and 99% of the time the user has Limewire or some other crap on there computer.. clear there cache files and theres piles of porn.. stuff like that.. I guess the reason why I like apple so much is because this doesnt happen.. its nearly impossible to screw them up.. I've used apple for 6 or 7 years now and I've never had a freeze, I've never had a virus, I've never had to reinstall my OS, where as in my years of using PC I had to reinstall the OS once a year.. and I'm not an idiot user who had limewire or surfed for porn or clicked stupid ads..

you said "sure it takes more smarts to properly use and protect a pc" thats why I like apple, because any idiot can use one and not worry about problems

anyways, i'm done with this topic, its stupid

must... resist... urge... to point out... <gasp> that you... just... said... you work better... with... <gasp> machines... designed... for... <gasp> idiots...

<gasp>

The thing I always wonder is if and perhaps when Apple were to ever catch PC with regards to sales etc. and thus there was a much larger push for scammers and virus writers to write things for apple, if it would remain to be such a stable system.

In my time with PC's I have used crappy laptops (the 400-600 dollar laptops) for the past 6 years. In that time I have never had problems with virii, or had to reinstall the operating system. The system pretty much acted like new throughout the course of it's lifetime.

What do I take this to mean? either I was incredibly lucky, or as has been said earlier, when computers get screwed up it is generally the stupidity of the person working with it that caused it to be that screwed up.

I will admit that windows has randomly frozen on me from time to time, etc. but I know apple has a tendency to do that as well.

Apple's total marketshare would have to catch up with Windows for that to happen. I mean, most backends for large corporations that control your credit card information and other vital data is not on Apple servers. There's no need for them to write a virus code for a Mac anyways. Phishing sites and web pages are so much easier and attacking the back end to get 1000 credit card numbers, names, SSN's, etc... is worth your time rather than attacking one user's home machine for their information.
