What exactly is a lens hood and how much are they? i use a nikon d40 by the way

It's just a plastic tube, usually black that attaches to the front of your lens and extends a few inches beyond the front of the lens. The purpose is to minimize reflections from ambient light on the lens surface that cause lens flare and other artifacts. It's very useful for shooting outdoors where you are shooting at close angles to the sun.

Many lens come with hoods, but you can buy them from most places that sell lenses.

Also helps protect the front element.
