Light trains

Good evening!

I'm absolutly new in photography and I was wondering how the photographer made those effects with the light trains.

Slow sync on the flash. Long shutter speed. Some kind of light to make the "trains' or just moving the camera around to get the ambient light to make the trails.

Or..........it's a completely different layer

looks superimposed to me

yeah, i'm also starting to think that some really may be superimposed...Shouldn't the strains always have the same figure? If you wave the camera for example in circles, every light should be visible as spirals on the picture afterwards...or am i wrong?
