Lossless editing with JPEG?

Both hard drives and DVD/CD deterioriates. I have lost data from both. When a DVD is lost, it's about 4Gb worth of data and when a hard drive fails it's 200Gb+!! However, I prefer to work with hard drives. A lot faster, make sure you have at least 2 copies of every file (on different drives - not partitions). Space of a 400gb hard drive is very small. You need close to 100 DVDs to get the same capacity!!!

So i now have

Internal
1 x 200Gb - Currently empty
1 x 250Gb - Working images.
1 x 300Gb - System disk and programs

External
2 x 200Gb (all my images are mirrored across these) - Usually one off site in case of fire/theft.
1 x 400Gb drive (backs up all my other data from the drives above)

Sounds a lot but i am not prepared to take risks again with my precious data.
