i think you may be confused on what 'opening up the aperture' means.
bigger aperture numbers means a smaller opening. f/22 is a tiny hole, f/1.4 is a huge one. it's the opposite of what you'd think it would be.
f/22 lets in a very small amount of light--use longer shutter speeds
f/1.4 lets in a huge amount--use fast speeds.
then we get into the whole depth of field thing. . . just practice.
no, i knew higher # meant smaller hole, thanks to shingfan. my camera only has a range of f/2.8 to f/8.0. so thats the best i can do with that.
