I read that the type of polystyrene boxes can be quite good for diffusing. I.e. you put them over something e.g. a flower or an insect and get a better photo
A) Has anyone tried this?
B) Any ideas if you live in the UK what shops get rid of these and where I can get one from?

It the type of application that you described, it would act as more of an enclosing reflector, but I can imagine how it is being intended.

I don't know about the UK, but in the US some places ship frozen foods in a styrofoam box. I have one that I am planning to use to make a homemade softbox. I would cut a hole for my flash and stretch some white nylon fabric over the open side.

Hi. I have experimented with lots of diffusing material, specifically for closeup and macro, and found the best to be thin styrofoam, as in takeaway styrofoam container material. I built a box for my Yongnuo flash, added refelctive material inside, and added two layers of styrofoma approx 1 inch apart. It's the best I have been able to achieve with on-camera flash.

try a milk jug too.
cut it to shape to cover a flash the way you want it to.
